Warning: The operating system only calls the BIOS service directly if you use a PC BIOS. The operating system usually calls the BIOS service indirectly, through a small set of software-based functions. This indirect call is faster than a direct call. In some cases, the BIOS service executes faster this way.

If you experience problems with the software modem (this often happens if you use the modem and ethernet ports on the same IDE port of the computer), you can change the BIOS default port.

The default port can be changed by accessing this option in the BIOS utility, but you have to refer to the motherboard manual for the correct port number.

However, the default port number is not a BIOS setting; you can change it only if you remove the BIOS jumper setting that is installed by the motherboard manufacturer.

Warning: Windows can cause permanent damage to the computer if you set the BIOS/CMOS jumper default port too high, or if you set it higher than the operating system's default setting. Some motherboards do not require a jumper setting to select a preferred BIOS/CMOS port.

The motherboard manufacturer can also program the jumper that you can find on the motherboard.

You may not be able to open files in other programs because the files may be incompatible with your operating system. Please see our Linux Support page for more information.

If your computer fails to start up, restart the computer, remove the battery, and then insert the battery again.

We recommend that you run your BIOS update via the BIOS utility in the Intel management software. To do this, follow the online instructions for your particular motherboard.

When is the Giro d'Italia?

David Kinnersly

The Giro d'Italia is the most prestigious one-day road race on the UCI's calendar and combines the talents of the highest-calibre international riders. This year's race starts in Sanremo on 11 May. The 238-kilometre course covers a number of mountains, including the Monte Zoncolan at 170km, the Passo di Brenta at 128km, the Stelvio at 194km, and Monte Crostis at 120km.

What is it like to race the Giro d'Italia?

David Kinnersly

The Giro d'Italia is the Giro's most famous and prestigious event, and a lifetime ambition for any cyclist. It's a long race at more than 200 kilometres, with more than 1,700 metres of elevation change. But the race is a fantastic experience, and it's a rare privilege to see a mass field of 1,500 or more. Once the peloton is away, it's downhill for the last 100km.

What are the team objectives?

David Kinnersly

The team objectives are to finish the race and cross the line as first, second or third in the general classification. Of course, this hasn't always been the case. Riders have improved by so much that the team now just wants to finish, regardless of the position. This year, the race comes after the Tour de France and the Tour of Poland, and so most teams do a short reconnaissance of the route before they leave.

Is the race in Italy?

David Kinnersly

The Giro d'Italia is always held in Italy. The Italian organisers have a great reputation and it's a race that speaks for itself.
