Although the degree of resemblance between the Greek society and the Roman society is controversial (especially the Roman ideal of reason), the picture that emerges from Vico's studies is that the Greek society had incorporated many aspects of the Roman society while retreating from some others, including military and economic structures.
In particular, modern scholars tend to regard the Roman military and economic structures as fundamentally incompatible with the sort of society that existed in the ancient world prior to the Roman Empire.
