Redirect to parent page if not defined?

I have a menu with a few levels. The user can click on a menu item to go one level deeper, or if they are already on that menu item they can click on a link to go back to the original page. I'm assuming that most people would want to avoid doing multiple redirects if possible. I've been mulling over the best way to do this... I've been thinking about this as it pertains to PHP. A non-obvious solution that I've been thinking about is: if a person enters a URL with no path (i.e. index.php) then it would redirect them to the root page and they'd have to go back. Or the opposite, say they navigate to /index.php/settings/etc - that would redirect them to the menu item /index.php/menu/settings/etc I've thought about the same for a site where users could navigate to pages with no submenus, but couldn't think of a good way to handle that situation. Is there any best practice or standard way to handle this? Or is there a standard way to say "if the path is undefined, go to the homepage"?

A:

If you're using Apache as a webserver, Apache will do the rewriting for you. You would set up your.htaccess file to not process your.php files directly, and setup the RewriteRule to redirect to the appropriate page (or root page). This will also apply to people accessing your website over HTTPS, where you will need to issue the HTTPS wildcard rewrite. A quick example for Apache (although this is for Apache, with the proper ServerAlias setup for your domain):

Plain Text
RewriteEngine on

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}!-f
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}!-d
            RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}!^/([^/]+)/index.php [NC]
